Introduction to Bird Photography class at Horicon Marsh
Please join PhotoMidwest for an approximately 3-hour introductory bird photography class at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center beginning at 10 am on Saturday, July 13. The class begins with a classroom session followed by about 2 hours photographing in Horicon Marsh. If there is bad weather, DNR staff will have mounted specimens to practice photographing indoors at the Visitor Center. Advance registration and payment is strongly encouraged because the class is limited to 15 photographers.
Prerequisites: Bird photography is one of the most demanding types of photography for both the equipment and the photographer. You must have a camera with at least a 4X telephoto lens for this class. This corresponds to the equivalent of a 200 mm focal length lens on a camera with a full-frame sensor. Note that this must be a 4X optical telephoto lens; a camera which merely enlarges the same number of pixels for a 4X “digital zoom” is not adequate. If you have questions about the adequacy of your camera equipment for this class, please email your concerns to Camera@PhotoMidwest.Org before you register for this class.
The class will cover basic camera settings for bird photography such as shutter setting, burst rate, auto-focus settings, and the trade-offs between the aperture f-stop and the ISO setting. We will then cover how to determine the best time of day, location, weather, and aspects of bird behavior to give the best potential for good photographs birds in flight and at rest. Finally we will review basic safety and ethical/animal welfare considerations.
