Ways to Volunteer
Visitor Services Volunteer
Visitor Services shifts are broken into morning and afternoon times, 7 days a week. Weekday shifts are 10am to 1pm and 1pm to 4pm. Weekend shifts are 10am-1:30pm and 1:30-5pm. Responsibilities include: greet and answer questions for center visitors, show the marsh movie in the auditorium, offer maps and brochures, help with directions, track number of visitors and make each Horicon Marsh visit as pleasant and informative experience as possible.
Gift Shop Volunteer
Gift Shop shifts are broken into morning and afternoon times, 7 days a week. Weekday shifts are 10am to 1pm and 1pm to 4pm. Weekend shifts are 10am-1:30pm and 1:30-5pm. Responsibilities include: welcome visitors to the Shop, highlight merchandise, finalize sales, wrap items and make each purchase a special destination experience. Other duties may include: clean and dust shelves, sweep as necessary stock merchandise as needed.
Examples of events and volunteer roles: Movies, luncheons, snow shoe hike/walk, paddle event. Responsibilities may include: planning, coordination, setup, cleanup, greeter, parking attendant, registration, refreshments attendant, server, pickup and delivery of items. Shifts and opportunities will vary and be announced as needed.
Help to build, restore and improve public access and recreational areas. Invasive species control. Nest box maintenance. Work on a variety of Marsh management and habitat projects with DNR and Friends of the Horicon Marsh.
Building maintenance, weed landscaped areas, trim, cleaning windows, mow and trim around building, sweep sidewalks, entry ways, pick-up litter.
Assist DNR wildlife education staff with school and community groups at the center and on the marsh. Volunteer naturalists will be required to go through training and may be subject to a background check.
Data entry, assist with prepping and assembling mailings, filing, call for volunteer help, publicity, donor records, assist with creation of posters and brochures and signs. Phone, computer, and email work will be required for this volunteer position.
Volunteer Coordination Assistance
Assist with coordinating daily volunteer schedules. Keep track of volunteer hours, awards, incentives. Assist with award luncheons and dinners. Phone, computer, and email work will be required for this volunteer position.
